King James was founded in 1998 by Alistair King and James Barty. Unlike most start-ups, they had no global partners, no international affiliates, just one small client and the belief that they could make better advertising than a great deal of the other agencies in town.
Under their own steam, they grew their company one client and one staff member at a time. King James remains independent to this day, and is currently one of the largest independent groups in South Africa. This independence has enabled the company to grow and develop an extraordinarily unique way of working. Most ad agencies talk integration. Few however genuinely do it, and have the case studies to prove it.
The King James Group comprises seven communication agencies that are individually best-in-breed specialists. We are a true integrated agency, with no replicated resources and no power struggle over budgets. We direct our clients’ spend to where it will work the hardest.
We believe this is how communication should be managed – not in silos, but in a collective who collaborate effectively on common ideas and with no selfish motives. Our clients have a choice; they can work with one, or as many, divisions that suit their business needs. We respect existing relationships that new clients may have, and work as well with outside specialists as we do with our own.
Our entire business model is based on our unique way of delivery. The highest proportion of our staff is creative and they work with centralised account and operations management, all under one roof. This structure ensures creative consistency and timeous delivery across mediums; it also ensures efficient use of resources and time costs.
We strive to create punch. Work that stands out, that can’t be ignored, that’s never insipid, always surprising and unexpected, occasionally even jarring – work that sits outside of the category’s comfort zone, not strategically sound wallpaper.
